Stroll down memory Lane with Wane

A preacher’s kid (PK), Hailes was born in Richmond, Virginia, and grew up in
Portsmouth, New Hampshire, New Brunswick, New Jersey, and the cities of Clifton
Forge and Charlottesville in Virginia.
After graduating from Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas in 1978, Wane served fifteen-
years as Directors of YMCAs, in Missouri, Wisconsin, Florida, North Carolina, and finally
Columbus, Georgia as the CEO of the A.J. McClung YMCA from 1990-1995.
Wane has 46 years of cumulative sales, marketing, and public relations experience in
both radio and newspaper. He has worked for the minority-owned Davis Broadcasting,
Inc., radio stations as an on-air personality and sales consultant, followed by the
Columbus Ledger-Enquirer newspaper as the Real Estate, Employment, and Automotive
sales consultant and the minority-owned Columbus Times newspaper as Vice
President/Advertising & and Sales.
Leaving the Columbus Times in December 2004, Wane took a “Leap of Faith” in starting
The Courier / Eco Latino newspaper in March of 2005. The Courier / Eco Latino serves
the African American, Hispanic, and other minority communities. Publishing weekly in
English and Spanish, the Courier/Eco Latino is the only bi-lingual newspaper in the Tri-
City area.
Since 1991, Wane has worked on air at Davis Broadcasting, Inc., playing R & B, Old
School, and Jazz. He currently can be heard on radio stations AM1340 and FM 94.1
WOKS 7 am -10 am Monday-Friday as the host of “Wake Up with Wane in the Morning.”
and on Saturday mornings from 8 am-11 am Wane takes you back in time, dusting off the
oldies but goodies to help Columbus wake up with a “Stroll Down Memory Lane with
Wane” featuring R&B classics from the 1960’s, 1970, and 1980s on K92.7 FM. His
love for radio began in 1974 with his weekly show as “The Surgeon of Sound” on his
campus radio station, KTJO 88.1FM.
On November 13, 2020, Wane was elected as the 23rd president of the Columbus
Branch NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) whose
mission is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of
all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.
He is married to Valerie Hailes, and they have five grown children and twelve
grandchildren.
